A four night stand with the boys of Silverstein!

In celebration of ten years together as a band and four full length albums on Victory, Shane and the boys of Silverstein have announced that they are playing a four night stand at the El Mocambo in Toronto! March 18th through the 21st, they will be playing one album in its' entirety each night and as a special encore will be playing rare songs and covers per request of the audience. Maybe you'll be able to see their great cover of 'Apology' in there by OneRepublic?

It's only $50 dollars for a four night pass and $15 dollars per show! This band is one of a few commemorating their tenth year anniversary this year so it's definitely a part of history Toronto fans shouldn't miss!

Rip Rev.

We've lost another musical soul yesterday in the drummer of Avenged Sevenfold, James "The Rev" Owen Sullivan. At 28 years old, he was found around 1 pm local time in Huntington Beach by firefighters in his home. It is believed that he died by natural causes.

He was one of the founding members of the band at it's inception in 1999 and was very much loved. The rest of the members of the band have released a statement which can be found below:

"It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we tell you of the passing today of Jimmy "The Rev" Sullivan. Jimmy was not only one of the world's best drummers, but more importantly he was our best friend and brother. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Jimmy's family and we hope that you will respect their privacy during this difficult time.

Jimmy you are forever in our hearts.
We love you.

M Shadows, Synyster Gates, Zacky Vengeance and Johnny Christ"

'Currents' :The latest from Treaty of Paris!

Growing up in Chicago, I was able to find and listen to some great bands in our huge punk/rock/pop scene. Included were bands like The Academy Is.. and Fall Out Boy that every knows, but there are so many more bands that are working hard, one in particular being Treaty of Paris.

The band has been together since 2005 and have been doing their thing since. That thing includes touring with bands like Yellowcard and Jack's Mannequin, releasing to national success their debut full length album "Sweet Dreams, Sucker" and just coming off the recording of their latest EP 'Currents'.

Listening to the new EP, it's a little different from what I listened to on 'Sweet Dreams, Sucker' but not necessarily in a bad way. The band's sound has definitely matured over these last two years and they are putting a solid EP out that has both sunny rock edges with songs like 'The Aftermath and a more acoustic punk side with 'Colleen'. In between these two tracks, the songs provide a bit more of a softer rock edge where their passion comes out in more ballad like rock tunes. I'm excited to see how they incorporate these new songs into their set, and luckily Chicago people will have the chance to see how very soon.

They'll be playing their EP release show at the famous Metro in Chicago on January 9th. Doors will open at 5:30 pm and The Insecurities, Last Fast Action and AM Taxi will be warming up the crowd for them. Tickets are available for just $10 dollars prior to the show and just $13 at the door. The set should be wild and hopefully it will be able to go across the country soon enough.

If that's not enough to sell you, I have three huge reasons that you should go! The use of the tambourine by Mike Chorvat, the lead singer is pretty awesome, hilarious tour blogs that they put together and their huge hometown spirit!

Let me know how the set goes and your favorite new songs!
You can find more of the boys here at their myspace.

There are some people you should be checking out!

Hey there!

There are a few people who I have come across doing the same thing I'm doing which is try to give you the insider view to the music industry, the behind the scenes part of it all, letting you know about what's coming, etcetera. We've interviewed some of the same great bands and I've always enjoyed checking out their interviews too so here we go!

www.youtube.com/bryanstars

This guy is sick and is currently interviewing some great bands while still attending school. He's interviewed bands like Killswitch Engage, 3OH!3, A Skylit Drive and my personal favorite interview with TAT. You should definitely check him out!

www.youtube.com/ak99superstar

Along with posting interviews with a bunch of great bands, he also is nice enough to videotape live sets of bands like The Devil Wears Prada, BrokeNCYDE and his latest just being posted today A Skylit Drive. We've both had the opportunity to interview those boys multiple times and the set is great! There is also a rumor that he'll be posting another multiple interview artist for the both of us, Breathe Carolina on New Year's Eve! Check out the set now, it's sick!

www.yousingiwrite.blogspot.com

Annie is a great music journalist out of New York and has interviewed huge acts like Ace Enders and Parachute, who we've both been lucky enough to have a chance to talk to! She covers festivals like SXSW and Jingle Ball so you should definitely check her out! She has always given advice when asked and actually just threw an awesome benefit for TWLOHA, my favorite charitable organization!

Saosin: In Search of Solid Ground.

They've been headlining the PacSun tour all fall and are hopefully having a well deserved break as these boys have been very busy! Saosin, who originally formed in 2003 in California, are a standard name in rock music today, and just put more fire behind that statement with their release of the second full length album 'In Search of Solid Ground'.

The band also played Warped tour main stage for their fourth summer on the tour and have switched to a new record label, Virgin. They have toured all over the world to exotic places like Bali and Indonesia and have played with such greats as My Chemical Romance, Alexisonfire, Linkin Park and Senses Fail just to mention a few.
They started in 2003 with Anthony Green as the lead singer, but after that short time, brought on the current front man Cove Reber and have found many levels of success since then! At their stop in Boston at the House of Blues on Decemeber 2nd, I got the chance to interview Chris Sorenson, who plays bass and keyboards and for the band along with providing the screaming in their tracks. Beau also joined in at parts, especially regarding albums he's been listening too lately. We covered everything from Chris's first show which was definitely a big one to how Warped ended up going for them.

What's your favorite part of touring?
Chris: I like seeing new places every time. When you play a show, it's nice to know your way around other cities too. So yeah, the traveling part.

How did Warped Tour end up going for you guys?
Chris: Warped was awesome. We've done that tour quite a few times so it's kind of pretty routine, you know but it's good.

If you could choose any three bands to go on tour with, who would they be?
Chris: I'd say Jimmy Eat World, I really like Jimmy Eat World, Oasis and Gwar. Maybe Rancid.

What's the craziest thing a fan has ever given you?
Chris: I don't know about a fan but another band gave us chia pets one time at the end of the tour.
Your newest album, 'In Search of Solid Ground' just came out a few months ago. How has that been doing so far?
Chris: It's been great. We just kind of started touring in promotion so we've been playing a lot of new stuff and kids have seemed to like it.

How do you go about the songwriting process for these albums?
Chris: Every song is totally different. We all come up with part of it.

If you were to collaborate with any other band on this tour who would it be and what would the song be about?
Chris: We were trying to actually do a full collab during the show, like on our last song but it didn't really work out. We weren't really able to meet up pre- tour. Um, I don't know. They're all awesome bands, just totally different.

What was the first show you went to as a kid?
Chris: Michael Jackson on the Bad tour.

Who are some of your bigger influences, maybe personally or for Saosin as a whole?
Chris: If you asked us all, you'd get like a 100% different answers. Um, I like heavy guitar playing. Most of us came from hardcore backgrounds.

What are you personally listening to? Any new stuff?
Chris: Not personally. Any new records you like, Beau?
Beau: The new John Mayer Record.Yeah, Love battle or whatever (Battle Studies). That one's really good, like that one a lot. Uh, I listen to a whole bunch of stuff. The new Saosin is pretty good!

If you were asked to, what would you cover for the new Punk Goes? It's Classic Rock.
Chris: That's a tough one. Maybe a Led Zeppelin song. Covers are a hard thing because any song that you would want to cover is already done so well.

Are there any more music plans we can look forward to?
Chris: Touring.

Check out the boys on myspace and watch for them on tour to some pretty international places for now like Bali, Indonesia and Japan in the new year. Hopefully they come back to our side of the world soon enough and pick up the new album..it's worth it! It was featured as one of the most anticipated albums of 2009 by Alternative Press!

Top Lists of 2009!

The first year of Mix and Mark, 2009, was a great year for music but next year? Even better. I've found so many new bands and songs to fall in love with this year that I couldn't be more excited for January 1st to strike and that first album to be purchased. This year I'm thinking it's going to be the new OK Go Album. I can't wait but to hold me over, I've come up with my top lists of 2009 and my most anticipated for 2009. Catch you in the new year friends. I have a few treats up my sleeve to finish up the year including a Saosin interview and hopefully a write up of my interview with Mayday Parade.
I'm excited to jump into the second year of Mix and Mark and hope you are too!

I guess we won't be seeing any more ANTcam videos.

Really the announcement of Anthony Improgo, the drummer of Metro Station, leaving the band isn't a shock to me. I've always seen the band truly as Trace Cyrus and Mitchel Musso. I think it's because I've always pictured the duo as the real band like I have in the past with Breathe Carolina and 3OH!3. I was lucky enough to meet some of the fellow Breathe Carolina band members last time around so now I see them as more of a piece of the band but for Metro Station, not so much.

All the best wishes to Anthony though in all the new adventures you go on and hopefully the boys still produce some new music as the duo as Japanese Girl keeps running through my head.

If you're in Chicago tonight...

Steady readers of this blog will know my love for the city I grew up in, Chicago and the scene that goes with it. If you find yourself there tonight during the holidays, get your tush to Angels and Kings Chicago (Yes, Pete Wentz's bar) and check out the FREE show from The Frantic and State And Madison tonight. Frantic will actually be playing eleven Warped Tour dates so catch them before they become the next big thing.

The imaginations of InnerPartySystem..disco babies and jesus!

Funny how it worked out that when I first met InnerPartySystem, I sat down with the top half of this photograph and when I met them again on the PacSun tour, it was the bottom half.

Jared Piccone and Patrick Nissley are the co founders of the band and Kris Barman and Jesse Cronan finish out the foursome. They just came off the extremely successful PacSun tour that also featured Saosin, Eye Alaska and POS and also worked extremely hard on the Warped Tour. I talked to Jared and Pat pretty early on in the tour in Montreal, which was only about two weeks in, where during the rest of the tour, they got moved up to a bigger stage and had gigantic crowds. "..We got bumped up to a bigger stage which was really cool for us and shit just kind of went crazy' Jesse suggested in our interview regarding this past summer's tour.

Last summer, the boys had also suggested that they would be demoing some tracks and from my time with Kris and Jesse, it became clear that this was very helpful to them. Read on for a little more of how the demoing for their second full length record which should be coming out in 2010. Look for the new winter mixtape they just released, and hopefully a new album soon! I don't know about you but I am pretty stoked for the idea of a new record coming from these guys, their shows are electrifying and the beats get stuck in your head!

How's the tour been going so far for you?
Kris: It's been going... it's been going pretty good. Especially like since you know we've been touring and playing some bigger shows.
Jesse: It's also awesome because we're really good friends with POS and the deejay after the warped tour so it's pretty much like hanging out with your friends all the time.

How did Warped Tour end up going for you?
Jesse: The rest of Warped?
Yeah.
Jesse: Yeah after that we got bumped up to a bigger stage which was really cool for us and shit just kind of went way crazy. The Detroit show was one of the coolest shows we've ever played.
Kris: Yeah definitely. That and Colorado.

Awesome. the last I talked to the other guys you were about to take a few months off to demo some music. Did that happen?
Kris: We did, it did happen. Through that, we realized kind of where we wanted the direction of the band to go. I think, I mean, I'm glad it happened.
Jesse: Yeah, we've got a handful of songs. We're not like so stoked on them but I think it's giving us like an idea of where we want to go. We'll probably end up keeping a couple of them. There are some bands that write like one hundred and fifty songs and only like twelve make it to an album.
That's crazy.

What's your favorite pa
rt of touring?
Jesse: Meeting people.
Kris: Seeing different places.
Jesse: Seeing different cities. Partying with people.
Kris: Just becoming friends with other people on the tour. Like one big family.

Who would be your dream acts to tour with?
Kris: Well, pretty sure Barry Manilow still pulls in tons of people.
Jesse: Blue Moon Group and George Carlin.
Kris: George Carlin sure. He's a funny guy. He had a sharp tongue. Um Daft Punk.
Jesse: Jesus. The Daft Punk version of Jesus.

Is there anything particularly crazy a fan has ever given you?
Jesse: We got a couple flags in Europe.
Kris: People are all about like bringing flags with your name on them. We have a swedish flag in our house somewhere that has IPS written on it.
Jesse: Oh, and that girl in Scotland who drew like a comic book of us.
Like a full fledged comic book?
Kris: It was like a one page thing you know. Each person had their own anime character that looked like them.

How do you go about the song process? Is it one person or more collective?
Kris: In the beginning, Pat already had like four or five songs done before the band even started and he was like 'Hmm, let's play these songs out' and then as everyone got together, it became more of a cohesive thing. Pat still writes most of the lyrics, stuff like that because he obviously has to be comfortable singing them. I think Don't Stop is like the only song we all wrote, like all parts, all together kind of.

You have a really big presence on the internet. How do you think that has affected your success?
Kris: It affected us in a good way...(phone goes off) as you can tell by my happy horn. I think the whole blog world and remix world definitely helped us out. We try to do a bunch of remixes. I think today the internet, all it can do is help you, it's like free marketing. I think Pete Wentz (friends and enemies) even has a cool upstart.
Jesse: Twitter's the jam, it's pretty cool.
Kris: We have a tweet page on our abacus, if you want to do that. Get's like one to two hits a day. That was the first twitter. Actually, the first twitter was probably like the carrier pigeon.
Jesse: Carrier pigeon carrying an abacus.
Kris: That should be a tweet.

If you had to choose one other band on this tour to collaborate with, who would they be and what would the song be about?
Jesse: Funny you say that because we are sharing a van with POS so we're like this (crosses fingers). We're homies and I guess there's talks of some kind of collaboration that we're gonna do so-
Oh cool.
Jesse: I guess that would be the answer but what would the song be about?
I've had people say things like zombies.
Kris: Zombies are overrated.
That was last week.
Kris: Is it twilight/new moon this week?
Yeah it's what The Maine said for doing a song with Rocket To The Moon when I caught up with them and VersaEmerge.
Kris: They all say zombies. How unoriginal. I would say it would be about killer alien babies that Jesus gave birth to. They have one eye.
Jesse: Hermaphrodite jesus and alien disco babies.
Kris: And us and POS are running away from them. It's like a concept album.
I'm ready for this, it needs to happen!
Kris: Then we get in a space ship and fly away. Then we get sucked into a black hole and get sent to an alternate dimension then we're the babies invading the earth. It's gonna be like Ziggy Stardust.
Jesse:
Like the first slayer record.

What was the first show you ever went to?
Kris: The Who.
Jesse:Stone Temple Pilots.
Those are biggies for your first shows. Sierra (Kusterbeck of VersaEmerge)'s was Christina Aguilera.
Kris: I like Christina Aguilera. She has a nice voice, not a bad looking body either if you know what I mean! I kid. No, the Who was actually the first time I smelled weed. I hadn't tasted nachos yet and this dude below me was eating nachos and I thought that's what weed smelled like I was like'oh man, what is in those chips? that smells really weird' and my dad was like '...that's a cigarette'.

Who are some of your bigger musical influences?
Jesse: Um, Nine Inch Nails, stuff like that. Phoenix, I don't know if you've ever heard of them.
Kris: They're awesome. I love their new album. It's like my favorite new album. Their old album is really good too.
Jesse: Death cab for cutie, Chordettes. Just got hip to the Chordettes, it's beautiful. I'm a big fan of really corny r&b too like Usher.
He's your man?
Kris: Do you know if Usher has a girlfriend?
POS: Used to. I don't know if he was married but they were together for like ten years.
Kris: I used to hear he was gay.
POS: But he was with the hottest one in TLC.
Kris: Left eye?
POS: Come on now, Chilli!

Are there any music plans we can look forward to from you guys?
Jesse: New album. New remixes. New set. A different way of performing our songs live.
Kris: Probably some new lighting soon.
Jesse: On another note, we just did a remix for 30 Seconds to Mars.

Who knew the barbershop had such good music?

Did you grow your moustache for Movember? The Moustache Men have been rocking them all month and they spent their time making their mixtape for November and it's all about the stache. With skits about what people call that little peach fuzz under their nose to what to do with the letter m, the mix is definitely one that's finding a place in people's playlists. Drawing from mainstream hits like "Baby Boy" by Beyonce to "Turn Me On" by Sean Paul, they add their signature edge and make something you can't miss.

Classi Assi, New Money and F.U.N.K., all well known montreal deejays have made a name for themselves in the Montreal scene and beyond. They were on quite a big tour across Canada earlier this year and have stayed active making new sets like HyperColor and the chillin and grillin barbecue series. The latest is Barbershop and you can check it out right here! It starts off with a hilarious skit that includes the moustache growing, it's very mysterious I tell you! It's a great mix of songs from all over the genres and definitely something you should be listening to.

You can catch them all over Montreal during the weekend, but my favorite night of the week is Thursday. You can catch the first two at BlueDog and the latter at Reggie's, the Concordia student bar. Either way make sure you stop by and be prepared to be stuck to the floor.

Keeping you updated on Warped-Dillinger Escape Plan and The Chase!

The Warped tour production team wasn't kidding when they said that we would be getting details this winter. So far, in the last two or so weeks, we have all the dates/locations/venues, a long list of bands and even more being added just after the weekend.

The new additions to the tour in it's sixteenth year are:

Dillinger Escape Plan

Just coming off a tour with Warped favorite Thursday Saturday night, these boys are definitely some to scream your faces off. They put on a electrifying live show and I'm definitely making it a priority to catch their set when they hit Boston again on the 13th of July!

www.myspace.com/dillingerescapeplan

The Chase
Playing a handful of dates starting July 22nd close to their hometown in Charlotte, The Chase will be bringing their alternative rock sound to the Warped tour crowds. With a similar sound to acoustic Hanson (which isn't a bad thing..at all!) and sensing a bit of the southern Augustana feel, I think these guys will definitely bring in some fans!

www.myspace.com/chasemusicsc

We'll be updating once new bands are announced, but if you want to, you can click around on warpedtour.com to find out if your favorite bands are playing your date of the warped tour. Boston is missing out on a few favorites of mine like The Frantic and The Word Alive, check them out for me!

Another album in 2010?

I like to think there is a little something for everybody on here. I don't lean to one "scene" in particular, I just tend to stay a little on the alternative side of the things and one band that is definitely alternative is Metro Station. I won't lie..Control is my jam.
You may hate them and not be able to stand their music, especially with some people thinking the whole time 'Your little sister is Miley Cyrus' but catch the boys live one time and I think you'll be a little more sold.
Electronica is commonly a type of music that seems like it's a bunch of computers doing all the work but treat yourself to a live show from any of the past bands I've worked with for example InnerPartySystem and Breathe Carolina. Their live shows are insane. Metro Station has been proving themselves over the last two years touring relentlessly off of their DEBUT album. It is crazy to think they are only one album in so when I heard that they were about to sit down and start working on their sophomore effort, I thought people were joking. Currently on tour all over the Uk, just coming off a five night stint at the O2 Arena in London, they will be finishing off some dates just in time to start working on the second album. Hopefully it is out by the end of the 2010 or to start off us on a bang for 2011, but they have started playing one of the sure to be on the new album songs "Japanese Girl".
I found the video below on ANTcam which is a video blog series that Metro Station member Anthony Improgo started doing. Check it out below!:

Four Year Strong is a cover band?

Definitely not a cover band but maybe trying it out? Who knows but currently you can find covers of both "Story of A Girl" and "Semi Charmed Life", along with the brand new release of their latest single "It Must Really Suck to be FYS right now"!

I don't know if they are lying about these covers, but they are fabulous and carry around an impressive 600,000 plays each! If you haven't checked out this local Worcester band yet, you can find them at the annual holiday show they play on the 27th of this month with Bane, Therefore I Am (another ginger..no wonder I love Boston/Woo local bands!), Smartbomb and Beyond City Lights.
They are also jumping on tour with The Bled, This Time Next Year and Title Fight starting on the 14th of January in Philly so catch them when they come around your part of the country and tell them Mix and Mark sent you considering they are my last post of this long long night! xo

www.myspace.com/fouryearstrong

It's all about P.O.S. finding the girl of his dreams..

..in a rave. Not your typical rapper talking about big money and girls, Stef Alexander also known as P.O.S. is definitely one that stands out in the crowd.
We've all seen Eminem, Jay-Z and even Asher Roth try the rap game and they all sadly don't even compare to what has been coming from Stef lately.

I first got the chance to see Stef in his element at Montreal's Warped tour stop during the 2009 tour. We were completely rained out and his manager was nice enough to pull us on side stage for his set. The crowd wasn't the biggest but he rocked them and by the end of the set, the crowd nearly tripled if not more. He may not be the typical warped tour fare but there have been rappers in the past. Warped is made to be something for everybody and P.O.S. does have something for everybody. He has the punk, hip hop melodies and beautifully written words to his music.
As the alternating main support act on the PacSun tour that ended tonight, P.O.S. has definitely drawn out a large portion of the crowd and is making a name for himself even larger that it has been in the past! Check out his input on how warped tour was for him to the story of Doomtree, which he is the co founder of, along with his view of the Minneapolis scene!

What's your favorite part of touring?
I get to play songs for a job. It's the best part about touring. It's like to me the only reason why anybody would ever tour.

How did Warped Tour end up going for you?
Warped was cool. It was really fun. It's always goo to be playing in front of crowds that have no idea what I'm trying to do until after it's half done.

If you could go on a tour with any three acts who would they be?
Any three acts? Mos Def, LP, Mars Volta.

'Never Better' came out a little less then a year ago. How has that been going so far?
People have been catching on to it in ways that I find cool and I appreciate. I don't really think about other people when I make music.
That's not a bad thing.
I put it out and get on the road to tour, people come out and that's all I can ask for really.

How do you go about the songwriting process?
If I feel like writing raps, I write raps. If I reel like making beats, I make beats. If I happen to have a crazy spur of creativity, I will do both but typically I just kind of write down all my beats and raps until it's time to make a record.

If you were to collaborate with any other band, what would the song be about?
If I were to make an awesome song with InnerPartySystem, it might be about meeting the girl of my dreams while at the biggest rave ever.
Kris from IPS:
That's a little different from what we said.
Stef: What did they say?
Kris: Something about celestial Jesus.
Jesse: I tweeted it. Disco alien babies.
Stef: And..meeting the girl of my dreams.

You co founded Doomtree who I believe release your albums hand in hand with Rhymesayers?
Me and a few other guys kind of founded Doomtree and we got it going. We did it because we were solo rappers but we wanted to have an outlet where we could all kind of work together. If I can get a show booked, and someone can get some press and someone knows a lighting guy, you know what I'm saying. We all can kind of contribute to make sure that everything comes out a little bigger and better.

What's the weirdest or craziest thing a fan has ever given you?
Um, the weirdest thing or craziest thing that a fan has ever given me. I got a painting of me on a street sign that they had stolen. Stole a street sign then they made a painting of me on it then gave it to me. That was cool.

Are there any future music plans for kids to look forward to?
I'm gonna make another record next year. That's always good.
Are you going to play any festivals?
There's a chance for Bamboozle, a chance for Coachella.

Minneapolis scene is huge. Where do you fi
nd yourself fitting?
Huge. Well because there are so many bands, it's okay to just do whatever you want. There is no major label around so you just go for it because nobody cares.
--
With the PacSun tour just ending out where POS was on the road with acts like Saosin, Eye Alaska and InnerPartySystem TONIGHT, POS is still keeping busy. He's slated to play a show with the legendary Bouncing Souls on the 28th in New Jersey and will soon be working on his fourth full length album. Pick up 'Never Better' and let me know what you think of Mr.Stef Alexander!
Thanks again Stef!

A little something that made me smile..

Listening to itunes on shuffle on this horribly windy( yes the cape hasn't been hit by the snow yet..just heavy heavy winds!), I came across 'You and Me' by Vega4. They are a great no longer together band that I saw opening for Augustana on a tour way back in 2006 and they amicably split ways a few months later. Johnny McDaid, the lead singer of the group, branched off into a solo career but after following his blog relentlessly, he updated maybe every six months but thinking of him again, I decided to take a chance!

A video called Paul Van Dyk featuring Johnny McDaid was posted and it is Johnny singing throughout the whole video but it seems Paul Van Dyk is a deejay. If my facts are off just let me know! I haven't fully researched his latest moves lately but I know this if fabulous and it's great to see Mr. McDaid singing again! I was really heartbroken when they broke up and am still crossing my fingers for a reunion tour but this definitely will do to then!:

Also, after clicking around a bit on his website, have come across two of his tracks "The Sweetest Hurt" and "Stay There" and so far they are amazing. It may partly be because of his gorgeous irish accent but his songs are beautiful. Check everything out on his website: www.johnyymcdaid.com!

The project seems to be a little slow moving but I hope more comes of this. I learned of their greatness way too late and I regret that all the time.

Around the Chicago area? Or anywhere in the country? The boys that make the girls travel to them are about to drop their new EP "Currents" and to celebrate the occasion, they will be holding a cd release party at Metro with several other great acts including The Insecurities, Last Fast Action and the Victory Gins on January 9th!

Treaty of Paris have been around for a while now and dropped their debut album in 2007 "Sweet Dreams Suckers" on Airport Tapes And Records. They stayed on the road endlessly touring with bands like Yellowcard, Jack's Mannequin and The Spill Canvas and playing a million shows all over including Bamboozle and SXSW to their name! The new EP will hopefully bring them back on the road soon but for now get your fix at their show, and if you can't make it, be sure to pick up the new EP 'Currents'. You can preorder it at SmartPunk.com and Shockhound, but I suggest you head over to SmartPunk for it where you can get a custom treaty of paris shirt with your order. From what I've heard so far of the new tunes, it's a purchase you definitely won't regret!

Also, if you are already a fan of Treaty of Paris and have any related pictures, they will be putting them together as a surprise at the show! You can send them to: treatypics@yahoo.com!

Check them out on their myspace here and on their website here!

Predictions?

Since I got involved in this silly game of the music business (hey Rooney tried to warn me), new tour announcements/routings/festivals get me incredibly excited. The most important to me? Take a wild guess....

WARPED!

If I hadn't gone to Warped Tour this past summer as in the 2009 festival, I don't think I would have even started working in this industry. I learned some hard lessons going into the festival but all worked out for the better. I befriended some amazing bands since then, and I can't wait to meet some new ones too! I thrive on what Warped Tour is and some day I want to be working on the whole thing in some sense, hopefully doing work for this blog and the music website I work for! But the importance of this post is that the first bands for 2010 get announced today, yes today December 18th!

Predictions?
Well personally, I just want to see Fight Fair on there. I talked to these boys a while back while they were on tour with Breathe Carolina and it was their biggest goal for next year. They are putting up a big tour announcement today so here's hoping it's Warped. I've got my fight fair sunglasses ready boys.

It's a long shot but I'd love love love to see Treaty of Paris back on there!
I'm digging for a repeat tour by TV/TV.
I won't lie, I kind of sort of really dig the Millionaires sometimes. Their songs are just god damn catchy..and I'd love to play dress up for it.
I really want to see some Jack's Mannequin back on it. They have a new album so totally possible.

Bands who will definitely be on it no matter what I think?
The Devil Wears Prada, Underoath (love!), 30H!3 (unless the rumored all time low tour is this summer!).

...and I'm thinking they'll throw in some random hip hop/rapper guy but don't think it will be POS this year even though he's awesome! Check out our interview tomorrow on here!

So really looking forward to the announcement even though the tour doesn't start for six months. Got to get prepped!

xoxo Colleen!
check it all out on warpedtour.com!

EDIT: lots going on tomorrow here..a lovely Treaty of Paris announcement and the newest mix from the Moustache Men..get it! it's for a good cause! xo

Meet Beautiful Lies on the B-Side!

Coming off their release of their full length 'Yeah, Finally' in 2009, the boston band Beautiful Lies are quickly making a name for themselves. Sharing stages with bands like The Click Five and Afroman, they have been around the music business for a while now. With a considerable amount of success in Europe like a lot of bands start off with, they are on their way to developing a strong following in the United States. With no shows on the schedule for now, I hope to see them out on the road soon. You know besides their date on the moon.

I recently sat down to sit with Zach via the interwebs (farthest to the right) and we talked about everything from the name to their favorite covers!

How did you come up with the name Beautiful Lies?
My brother Nick and I started Beautiful Lies initially as a side project to a band we were touring with. He had already used the name for his solo demos and we liked the sound of it (plus hate the process of coming up with band names). He says it is a means of finding good in a world that can be negative a lot of the time.
What is your favorite album of 2009 thus far?
MuteMath- Armistice

How do you about the song writing process? Does one person write the lyrics or is it more of a collective effort?
We each write music and lyrics separately and bring them to the band for the final touches. Typically whoever writes the song will sing the lead vocals with the rest of the band covering the harmonies and other parts. Sometimes the songs are complete demos with full band recordings done by each songwriter, and other times they are acoustic ideas.
Who are your major musical influences?
I'm heavily influences by the alternative rock of the 80s/90s as well as the classic pop of the 60s/70s. I am influenced by a ton of different artists whether or not it actually comes out in my music: Pixies, Nirvana, Foo Fighers, Counting Crows, The Beatles, Beck, Elton John all had a large influence on me as a younger writer. I really try to listen to as much music as possible because a love variety as well as learning new ideas and ways to express them through music and lyrics. In addition to the alternative and classic pop I love hip hop and electronica, indie and punk rock, even latin and world music. Currently into The Decemberists, MuteMath, The Fireman, Dandy Warhols.

Who are you listening to these days?
I just made a "2009 Summer Mix" cd-r (yeah, an actual cd, remember those?) for our van that had Dandy Warhols, Death Cab, Decemberists, Brian Vander Ark (Verve Pipe singer) 30Hz (European breakbeat) some indie electronica, some one hit wonder 90s alt bands and 4 instrumental Dr. Dre tracks!

Do you ever play covers? If so, which songs?
We get really into our covers and try to make them sound as much as possible like the original recording because it is an exercise on how to play differently than we're used to, plus it is a lot of fun! Sometimes we go overboard like the past Halloween when we covered Weezer's entire "Pinkerton" album front to back (also the year before that we did their "Blue Album") Other times we pick covers that make us laugh ("I Melt With You" by Modern English) or by bands that influenced us ("Where Is My Mind?" by Pixies).

What are you up to right now, music wise? What can we look forward to?
Right now we're making plans to tour in Europe this winter. We are lucky enough to have an awesome label over there (Stargazer) who has gotten our new album "Yeah, Finally" on the shelves of stores all over Germany and other places. We're also excited to see a ton of friends and fans that we met when we went last March. Also, you can look forward to a BL attempt at a holiday song at the end of the year!

What's the most unusual place you've played or recorded in?
One thing that is unusual is that we became the first American band to play in Nasice, Croatia (which was an awesome show at an awesome rock club packed with hundreds of people who were really into the music!) but we've always loved playing shows anywhere and everywhere whether they be in traditional venues or not. Among some of the stranger places we've played include a yoga studio in Switzerland, a rap show with Afroman, a sweet sixteen, a wedding, New Jersey, and even at peoples apartments/basements/etc. We're always happy to play no matter what the environment.

What's your favorite treat?
Doing these interviews! that and Butterfingers!

The boys have just released the Christmas song they talked about on their myspace today, check it out and hopefully we see the boys back on the road soon!

Video of the Week: Unreleased Music Video!

Treaty of Paris are one of the top notch Chicago bands I have the pleasure of knowing and they have a lot of things going for them right now. They are about to release their new EP 'Currents' and have an awesome CD release show planned at the Metro. They have also just finished their sophomore full length album in a follow up to 'Sweet Dreams Sucker' which was released in 2007!
Maybe as a treat to lead up to the release, their manager Mike Racinelli has just released a never seen video for the band in "I'll Come Back". The boys take it back to the olden days in the video and it just had to be my video of the week. Check it out:

Props to NeverShoutNever!

Who would have thought? All of NeverShoutNever's also known as Christopher Drew's december tour dates have officially sold out. Normally a sold out tour would not make the news waves, but Christopher Drew is a different story. His music has surprised the music industry so much in general and considering he actually has not released a full length album yet (with his first dropping January 26th "What Is Love") is insane.

At 18, it's just him and his guitar taking over the alternative music world. To be perfectly honest with you, I have been hearing about this musician for a long time but never actually took the second to listen and his latest EP has secured a place in my itunes. If you're missing him on his latest slew of dates, he has just announced a two week tour of acoustic dates for the month of January starting in Little Rock, Arkansas and ending in Lawrence, Kansas at the Bottleneck. Seeing how fast he sold out the December dates, I would get right to buying those tickets. He is also rumored to be headlining the AP Ball tour this spring which is huge! I really do think we are all catching something big in the making.

The fad of a boy just doing his thing has really kicked off this year with Stephen Jerzak, NeverShoutNever and Owl City and I don't think it will be stopping any time soon. Congrats Christofer and see you Saturday!

I told you it was going to be a big day!

I just woke up and already there are new Muse dates announced for their first US shows in 2010, Cornerstone has started annoucing bands and much more. It is unbelievable how exciting 2010 is going to be!

But first off, the Cornerstone bands. If you don't know what Cornerstone is, it is a six day long festival from June 28th to July 3rd! One of the festivals you camp out for in Illinois! They've just announced the first few bands so get excited. I'm a huge fan of Switchfoot and ..Skillet? That couldn't be more exciting. Check them out:

The Devil Wears Prada
Switchfoot
August Burns Red
tobyMac
Skillet
David Crowder Band
Red
Phil Joel
Demon Hunter
The Parachute Band
Iona
Flatfoot 56
Haste The Day
John Reuben
Glenn Kaiser Band
Reilly

Further more, along with other music news today, look for my interviews with the boston band Beautiful Lies and the rapper POS aka Stef who is absolutely amazing. Leave a comment if you'd like, I could use some support. Diving into transcribing a thirty minute long interview today and as always give me a shout if you know a sweet band, a tour I should know about, or just want to chat at my email: mixandmarkzine@gmail.com!

Thanks a lot!

Hanson @ Bamboozle?! <3

If you know me, or read this blog steadily considering how much of my inner music geek I let get out on it, you'll know I never hide guilty pleasure music for me. One of those bands would be Hanson. I kind of was once again familiarized with the band when I went to their show this past October in Boston at the House of Blues. I was there to interview their main opener Hellogoodbye and waited with Zach to be let in to the venue when girls were going crazy over him before the show. I unfortunately missed their set that night due to having to run to another show across town but since then, I've been listening to a few of their songs again and really like their newest acoustic EP, 'Stand Up Stand Up'.

Admit it. When you were younger and when I was younger too, we all had crushes on the sixteen year old version of Hanson, and for the youngest maybe he was eight at the time. Mmmbop was played at all of our elementary school dances and their multiple "comebacks" were played on MTV through out the rest of our education. The brothers never really disappeared, they just became a relatively underground artist. As seen at their show, and on their multiple tours and albums through out the years, they have maintained a very loyal fan base and that could be the reasoning behind the shows just announced. They will be doing a five night residency at Gramercy Theater in New York, each night playing the entirety of one album leading up to playing the entirety of their new album coming out this spring. The next night, they will be playing Bamboozle which just got announced an hour or so ago.

I have a feeling we are all going to be re-introduced to these boys in 2010, and I know they'll have a solid crowd at the festival! All the best of luck to the boys, I'm looking forward to the new album!

The openers of the Pac Sun Tour: Eye Alaska.

This year's PacSun tour has quickly become famous for the wide variety of acts brought on the tour this fall. You have Saosin, techno electronic InnerPartySystem, rapper POS and words cannot even describe Eye Alaska. While listening to their music, I think of the mod time period in England, lyrics reminiscent to Robin Thicke and hard rock and roll. The lyrics are the kind that will get stuck in your head extremely easily and seem really familiar to me.

Sitting here listening to their tracks on myspace while I write this interview here, I am struck by the difference of emotions and feelings I get from their live show to sitting at my computer listening to their music. To see them live is something you must do if you want to get the real Eye Alaska experience. To be perfectly honest, I was blown away by their live show. They came on the stage with a bang and never let the energy level go down. It seems that they come alive on the stage with passion and put on a completely different live show from something I would ever expect just by listening to their tracks at home, and it's a good thing. The band is definitely one to look out for!

After the show, I got a chance to sit down with Brandon Wronski, the lead singer after their show at the House of Blues in Boston. He was energetic and passionate through out the interview but he didn't seem anything like what I had just seen portrayed on stage from him. He's an entertainer and so is the rest of the band for sure!

How has the Pac Sun tour been going so far?
It's been really really good. All the bands have been awesome. The diversity of the whole thing is really cool.

What's your favorite part of touring?
Meeting new people is always cool, especially getting to know the other guys on the tour. Making new friends is always fun!

Your album just came out a little while ago, 'Genesis Underground'. How has it be going so far?
It's been awesome, really really cool. It came out in the middle of last tour, so it's only been a while.

How did getting signed to Fearless come about?
Well, we were talking to a bunch of different places and then Fearless came to see us play. A lot of the other labels wanted us to choose one style and try to fit us in a box. Fearless came to us and they got our vision and understood us. They knew we had different styles and different emotions and they were the only ones who really go that.

If you could do a dream tour with any bands, who would they be?
Jay Z and um..Bjork.

Who are some of your bigger influences?
I listen to a lot of movie soundtracks and hip hop, country, really everything.

If you were to, what would you cover for classic rock?
I don't really like classic rock.
Country?
(laughs) I would do Rascal Flatts. I'm a big fan. I love Rascal Flatts.

If you were to do a collaboration with anyone else on the tour, who would it be?
Ooh. Um, I'd probably do. I don't know, I'd love to do a collab with anyone. I love everyone. Probably everyone in one collab, one giant song.

What's your favorite treat?
Right now, I'd say like a Take Five bar. That's my jam. Someone made take five cookies once for us!

What's the craziest thing a fan has ever given you?
I tweeted how much I wanted a mini pig like you know those pigs that are like mini, like a teacup and they don't get any bigger. I was like, 'oh i want one so bad' and this girl was like 'oh there is a mini pig farm across the street from my house'. She was like 'I really want to bring you one. Would you take care of it?' YES! So, if that happens I'm gonna be really psyched!

Watch out for these boys on the last few dates of the PacSun tour, and check out their tunes on their myspace.

New music?

It was annouced today that NeverShoutNever, also known as Christofer Drew, is releasing his new EP through all digital providers today! The only physical copies were released through Hot Topic starting on December 8th, so if you didn't get a chance to pick it up then, you can now find it everywhere online including on shockhound.com and smartpunk.com, and being a blogger, I suggest you go there first!

The EP will feature a few things! It will have two of the tracks off Christofer's first full length album that is dropping in 2010, two music videos, a b side track and one live track. I kind of see it as a sampler to what is to come off his debut album. I just started to really get a feel for who NeverShoutNever was with in the last month to be honest but he's been around for a long time, so it's funny to think that this will be his first actual album.

I'll be catching this fellow at Jingle My Bells in Hartford this Saturday, let me know if you'll be there too! I'll be talking to a few acts including Hit The Lights, Sparks The Rescue, Ace Enders, Ian Walsh and Days Difference among others!

New Alesana tour dates posted!

Alesana, quite arguably one of the biggest forces on Fearless Records, is about to drop their new studio album and have just provided a full four months of dates in support of it!

They're bringing fearless family members A Skylit Drive and The Word Alive for the ride along with Of Mice and Men and We Came As Romans for the north american tour and are keeping A Skylit Drive around for the europe part of the tour along with Emarosa and Bury Tomorrow!

If you've been reading this blog for a while or even just today, I've interviewed A Skylit Drive and The Word Alive both in the past and am really looking forward to their Worcester date of the tour on Valentine's Day! I don't normally listen to a lot of screamo, but with how varied this blog has became, I've kind of started really liking it. In particular, the wires and concept of breathing album for Skylit Drive that came out in 2003 and I'm really loving the debut EP "Empire" from The Word Alive!

Check out my second interview with the full band of A Skylit Drive here and my interview with The Word Alive here. Both bands are filled with awesome dudes and you can catch them on the dates below when they come through your part of the country and sometimes world!:

Yesterday at the Middle East...The Bay State, Rooney, Tally Hall & Crash Kings!

Yesterday I caught two shows at The Middle East in Cambridge, MA being both the early show and the late show which leads to me and the security guards pretty much being best friends.

I walked into the Middle East upstairs to find a not set up stage, maybe thirty people. With one table of merch, it was pretty sure it was going to be a small show, but the bands seemed to expect this. I was not really impressed with the first act, Moe Pope. Unfortunately, I have seen that all before and that may seem harsh, but to me he came off as a teenage form of POS and I have nothing against POS. The material just seemed redundant. Who hasn't seen a million political rappers in this decade? I give them points for trying though and they did have some good beats, and it probably works for them that the new album will be free!

Second on the stage was the band I was supposed to be there for, The Bay State. From the stage set up even, I knew I was in for a treat. They have a bay state designed drum which was great and also had a stocking hung on the stage with Tom's, the name of the lead singer's, name on it. This band won a contest with the Glamour Kills company for writing a theme song for the clothing company, and it can be seen through both the picture selected and on their bodies and equipment. In Drew's words, he "loves glamour kills. I needed a makeover".

Now to the actual show. Something awesome about this band is their use of the viola which brings me back to the days of Yellowcard. Evan James is en garde with the instrument and rocked it. One thing in particular I really liked is something that you don't always find in pop punk shows. Along with fast, upbeat songs, they also had some slower songs with lots of meaning like Haunting. When we sat down in our interview post performance and I asked about the song and the slower parts of their set, Tom the lead singer suggested that it was haunted meaning it was like going by places you always used to go to with your girlfriend or boyfriend and experiencing the feeling of loss.

After our interview, I made it down to the line to start getting stoked for the Rooney headlining show later that night. There was definitely a little bit of a different vibe then the last two shows I've gone to at the Middle East. The last two were Ryan Gosling's band Dead Man's Bones and the Family Force 5 tour with acts like Breathe Carolina and Cash Cash. Rooney has its young fans in the crowd but they aren't your typical "I wear leopard print leggings as pants and bright neon headbands". One gets a stronger memory of the Ryan Gosling show in comparison. There was definitely a more mature audience but there was another similarity in the audience. Since Rooney got dropped by Geffen records, those who did not stay in touch with their music may not have known that the boys have just finished prior to the tour, they had just finished recording a new EP and full length album.

First up were the Crash Kings. There are only three major instruments used by the band, being the guitar, the keyboard and drums. They were on fire and something I haven't been lucky enough to see you lately. It was a true real rock show. The crowd was moving through the whole set, the vocals by Tony were on fire. They had the boston band element in full swing with their indie style and love for the crowd. Something I really liked about this set was the slight doo wop beat they had to their music. Another thing was their beautiful guitar riffs that reminded me of Jet and The White Stripes, which are no small bands to be compared too. Overall, it was a great show and I know I'll be in the audience when they come back to Boston in February at the Great Scott, and you should be too!

Next up was Tally Hall, who had just gotten to the venue five minutes prior to the set, which lucky for the audience gave us five extra minutes of Crash Kings! Tally Hall are a little surprising, and every song I truly started to listening too, I had no idea what was going to happen. During the set, I heard music reminiscent of Fun. and Steel Train, both in the same genre really. They were was rap, there was doo wop and there were matching ensembles which kind of distracted me. On stage, they sport each a different colored tie, a black fitted vest and black trousers. They really bring on a indie sense to their music, and to me, and the crowd seem to have a lot of fans in the audience. I would want to guess they are one of those much loved indie wonders from wherever they come from. There were high moments and there were low moments. Highs included the boys sound checking with songs from West Side Story and Annie instead of the "check...check..check". Another part of their set that I really liked is that yes the band does rap in some of their songs but it's not your typical rapping, it is much more fun and melodic! They definitely have their quirks, and they know how to move a crowd, at one point in their set they even make duck sounds through a megaphone! They even used a kazoo which at the time I actually couldn't think of the name for it, but Treaty of Paris uses it too and that's how I remembered it! A personal favorite quote from the band near the end of their set was "Thank you very much to Rooney for having us. They birthed us!" They put on a great show!

The final act to play was one I have been waiting a long time for. The boys of Rooney took the stage with the classic Rooney flag and jumped into their set with one of their first major songs, "Blueside". From then on, they mixed in their new EP with the tracks 'Suckceed', 'I don't Understand' and 'Wild One' which was actually song by Ned on lead vocals. They played everyone's favorites like 'I am a terrible person', 'Sorry Sorry' 'I'm Shakin,Shakin' and 'When Did Your Heart Go Missing'. The crowd had clearly missed the band and were completely into the show which was clear from their swinging hips and energetic hand claps. One of my favorite quotes of the night too was from Robert when he was talking to the crowd about who was going to school for the music business or working in the industry and said "You can write a note to your teachers if you fail. We'll take full responsibility"!

It was a great night, and I interviewed Crash Kings at the show along with working on a future interview with Robert and the guys! Check out the last two dates of the tour and the new full length album coming out this year!
